Two People Who Were on Murder Charges Were Caught After They Escaped From a Mississippi Jail

Saturday, one day after they got out of a Mississippi jail, two “dangerous” prisoners who were being held on murder charges were caught.

Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, were last seen by police around 2:20 a.m. Friday, after breaking out of the Claiborne County Detention Center.

The sheriff’s office shared a Facebook Live video on Saturday that showed Collins and Johnson being led out of a house and into a police car. The sheriff said the house had been left empty, but the police had gotten calls saying the two people were there.

Chief Deputy Christy Sykes said that Collins and Johnson got into a shared area of the jail by climbing through a panel in the ceiling. She said they went to a window and used bed sheets to fall to the ground. The jail staff knew right away about the escape because other prisoners told them.

In a previous Facebook post, the police said Johnson hurt his leg during the escape and walked very badly.

Sykes said that Collins and Johnson did not leave the building with any guns. He also said that the police did not think they were armed, but they had warned that the two people were dangerous.

The sheriff’s office told people to “take necessary precautions.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said that no one should talk to the two guys.

The sheriff’s office said Collins was being held because of charges against him in another county. NBC affiliate WLBT of Jackson says Collins was caught in 2023 for the murder of his cousin, who was 46 years old.

He was being held because of charges in Jefferson County.

Sykes said on Friday that Collins and Johnson would be charged with more crimes once they were caught.

Sykes said that this isn’t the first time that prisoners have been able to get out of the building through a vent in the roof.

She said, “It’s been a problem.” “We’re working closely with the board of supervisors to get this taken care of as soon as possible.”
