In an unexpected turn of events, a Georgia appeals court has stopped Trump’s case for election fraud. This is a major win for the former president. His co-defendants are also affected by the ruling.
The case will not happen before the election, according to the new order that was made on Wednesday. The court said the case will be put on hold until a group of judges decides if Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be removed from her position.
The appeals court could decide that Willis is not qualified by March 2025, but it could hear the case sooner. Willis’ office said they couldn’t say anything about the appeals court’s order right now. Steve Sadow, Trump’s main defense lawyer in Georgia, said the decision was fair.
“The Georgia Court of Appeals did the right thing by stopping all proceedings against President Trump in the trial court until it decided on our interlocutory appeal, which says the case should be thrown out and Fulton County DA Willis should be removed from her position for her misconduct,” Sadow said.
A representative for Willis’ office said they couldn’t say anything about the order from the appeals court. Some of Trump’s co-defendants have been trying to get Willis kicked out of the race by saying she is having an affair with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she hired for the case.
These people were charged with saying that Willis made money from their relationship. Judge Scott McAfee ruled in March that there wasn’t enough proof to be sure that Willis had made money from the relationship.
Trump was found guilty in Manhattan last week of forging business papers to hide the fact that he paid adult film star Stormy Daniels hush money during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has been found guilty of a crime and will be punished in July.
