Texas Deputy Erika Serrato, 24, Dies After Crash Scene Truck Collision

Montgomery County Deputy Erika Serrato, 24, was tragically killed while directing traffic on I‑45; the community mourns her service and sacrifice.

Deputy Erika Serrato, 24, of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, was killed in the line of duty early Sunday morning, June 28, 2026, after being struck by a commercial truck while directing traffic at the scene of a crash on Interstate 45 near The Woodlands.

Authorities reported that Serrato was assisting with a multivehicle collision involving a suspected impaired driver around 2:39 a.m. when a heavy‑duty truck towing a trailer collided with two marked patrol vehicles and then struck her.

She was rushed to a local hospital but later died from her injuries. Another deputy was injured by debris but has since been treated and released.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, and officials confirmed that Ashton Jammer, 34, was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated in connection with the original crash.

The driver of the truck was also hospitalized, and further details are pending as investigators work to determine the full circumstances that led to the tragedy, including whether visibility, speed, or driver impairment played a role.

Sheriff Wesley Doolittle described the department as completely heartbroken, noting Serrato’s dedication to public service since she joined the sheriff’s office at age 18. She began her career as a detention officer before becoming a deputy in January 2026.

Assigned to District 2, she was known for her commitment to protecting the community and her willingness to serve. Serrato would have celebrated her 25th birthday next month, making her loss even more painful for colleagues and loved ones.

Flags across Montgomery County have been lowered to half‑staff in her honor, following approval from Governor Greg Abbott. Funeral arrangements and memorial details will be announced in the coming days, and the sheriff’s office has pledged to support Serrato’s family and ensure her service is remembered.

Community members have already begun leaving tributes, flowers, and messages of condolence at the sheriff’s office and along the stretch of I‑45 where the incident occurred.

This tragedy underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers while directing traffic at crash scenes.
National data shows that traffic incidents remain one of the leading causes of officer fatalities, often occurring when drivers fail to slow down or move over near emergency vehicles.

Officials urge motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching crash sites, emphasizing that awareness and responsibility can save lives.

The Move Over law in Texas requires drivers to reduce speed and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles, but compliance remains inconsistent.

Serrato’s death has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic safety laws and greater public education about the risks officers face while performing routine duties that place them in harm’s way.

Deputy Serrato’s passing has united the community in grief and reflection. Fellow deputies, local leaders, and residents have expressed condolences, remembering her as a dedicated public servant who gave her life in the line of duty.

Advocates for law enforcement safety note that her death is a reminder of the risks officers face daily, often while performing tasks that may seem routine but carry significant danger.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on accountability, community support, and honoring the memory of Deputy Erika Serrato. Her legacy will endure through the lives she touched and the service she gave to Montgomery County.

For many, her story is a call to action to ensure that officers directing traffic or responding to emergencies are protected by vigilant drivers and stronger safety measures.
