Tennessee is now accepting applications for security funds from groups like mosques, synagogues, churches, and temples.
The $750,000 in the state budget will pay for the 12-month grants, which will be used to pay for security staff.
“Unfortunately, places of worship are often easy targets,” said Greg Mays, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. “By their very nature, these places are easy for a lot of people to get to and don’t have many security measures in place, which can make them open to attack.” With the Houses of Worship Security Grant, qualified organizations can hire trained security staff who can help avoid or lessen a tragedy in case of an emergency.
Groups must use forms from Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security to apply for the grants by the end of July 12.
The biggest gift that can be given is $100,000.
The company has to use the security staff at the same address, building, facility, or structure that was given in the application.
As a Tennessee POST-certified cop or a Tennessee licensed security guard working for a contract security company, the security staff must be certified.
