The House Ethics Committee is looking into whether Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) used illegal drugs while he was in office. The investigation is mostly about Gaetz’s attendance at a party in Florida in 2017 where many illegal drugs were reportedly present, as confirmed by a sworn statement from a woman who attended the party.
In her statement, she says she saw a girl who wasn’t old enough to be there naked and that bedroom at the party, which was attended by other adult men, were “made available for sexual activities.” Before, the Justice Department looked into whether Gaetz had slept with the child, but in 2023, they found no evidence to press charges. A representative for Gaetz said that he doesn’t remember going to a party like the one described above.
Gaetz was fired earlier this month by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who said that Gaetz lost his job “because one person, a member of Congress, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old.”
Gaetz is a far-right member of the House of Representatives’ “MAGA Squad.” He is part of a group of people who are making it harder for Congress to do its job. Gaetz was involved in the motion to remove the Speaker, which caused chaos in the Republican caucus. Texts obtained by the committee also showed that he was going to meet up with a woman that a friend had paid for sex.
