Griffin has received hundreds of prayers from the community.

The community of Sherman, Texas is grieving. Quietly, heavily, and all at once.

Griffin Stokes, a young man from Sherman who was known around town for his bright spirit, his kindness, and the kind of smile that people tend to remember long after a conversation ends, has passed away unexpectedly.

His death has sent shockwaves through his family, his friends, and a community that watched him grow up and fully expected to watch him keep going.

His sister Lisa Stokes broke the news herself, in the way that only a parent who has been putting off the hardest moment of their life can.

“Well, I’ve been dreading having to make this post, but here we are,” she wrote, before sharing the details of her son’s services with the people who loved him.

That single sentence said more than paragraphs ever could.

Griffin was described by everyone who knew him as someone who made rooms feel better just by being in them. He went out of his way to lift others up, to offer a hand when one was needed, and to show up for the people around him in ways that left a lasting impression.

He was a cherished son, a loyal brother, and a deeply trusted friend.

Whether through his years in school, his involvement in the community, or the everyday moments that add up to a life well lived, Griffin built something real in Sherman. He built relationships that clearly ran deep, and the outpouring of grief in the days since his passing is proof of exactly that.

A Community That Refuses to Let Him Go Unremembered

The tributes that have poured in from friends, family members, and community members paint a picture of a young man who touched far more lives than he probably knew.

Teresa Tee Stone offered words that captured what so many people were feeling. “Look at that winning smile, forever handsome Griff,” she wrote, before directing her words to the family.

“Lisa, Jerry and Brody, the moment that you feel like you are short on strength, I pray that God and His Appointed Angels remind you that they are right there waiting to catch you, waiting to breathe for you, waiting to hold you, catch your tears and comfort you.”

Jason Stewart spoke to the support system surrounding the Stokes family. “Praying for you and your whole family, Lisa. No words to help with things, I know, but you have a huge support group that are with the whole Stokes crew.”

Bonnie Scranton put plainly what many others were only thinking.

“Dear Lisa, I’m so very sorry that Griffin has passed. This is a parent’s worst nightmare.”

Dee Gowling, writing from what appears to be a distance, expressed the particular pain of not being able to be there in person. “Lisa, Jerry, Emma and Brody, oh that we loved closer to join you in farewelling your beautiful Griffin. Our continued prayers are with you all.”

Debbie Noble Baecht wrote something brief but carrying the full weight of personal experience. “This breaks my heart. I know the loss of a son.”

The comments go on and on, page after page of people reaching for the right words and coming up short, because there are no right words.

There is only love, and the people of Sherman have been showing up with it in abundance. Griffin is survived by his parents Lisa and Jerry Stokes, and his siblings Brody and Emma.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 12th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman, Texas. A funeral service will follow on Saturday, June 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Legacy Bible Church in Denison.

Griffin Stokes was a young man whose future was wide open in front of him. Sherman, Texas is smaller without him in it, and the people who knew him are going to feel that for a very long time.

Rest easy, Griffin.
