After being arrested and charged with four counts, Scottie Scheffler made a statement. He was taken by Louisville police on Friday morning while trying to get into Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the PGA Championship.
The best player in the world was moving around an accident scene in the middle of the road. When Scheffler’s marked car tried to avoid traffic, police tried to clear an accident death. Scheffler was told to stop by a police officer, but he drove another 20 yards before stopping.
Scheffler was handcuffed and taken into prison. He was later freed on his own promise. Assaulting a police officer in the second degree, which is a Class C felony, as well as criminal mischief in the third degree, reckless driving, and not following an officer’s traffic signs are all misdemeanors.
This is what Scheffler said in an interview with ESPN.com:
“This morning, I was doing what police officers told me to do.” It was a mess, which was understandable after the terrible accident, and I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do. I never meant to ignore any of the directions. I hope to forget about this and concentrate on golf today.
“Of course, everyone involved in the tournament sends our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in the accident earlier today.” It really does put things in their proper place.
