Plantation officials declared a significant advance in a “decades-old missing person” case after a submerged vehicle containing “skeletal remains” was discovered Sunday afternoon in a small retention pond. Plantation police said the vehicle was found around 3:48 p.m. near the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and North Flamingo Road.
According to officials, the remains were discovered inside the car, which had presumably gone undiscovered underwater since 2000.
The discovery was made with the assistance of Sunshine State Sonar, a volunteer group dedicated to solving missing persons cases involving vehicles and their passengers.
On Monday, overhead footage from Sky 10 showed police and the medical examiner’s forensic reaction squad analysing the area. Investigators could be seen excavating and sifting through the area, which is now a crime scene.
Authorities have not released any details about the person’s age, gender, or identity at this time.
Plantation Police investigators have seized charge of the remains and the vehicle while they try to identify the person and figure out what happened.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” Sunshine State Sonar said in a Facebook post on Monday.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
