Paul Flores, who was found guilty of killing college student Kristin Smart, was stabbed Wednesday at a jail in California. This is the second time in the past year that another inmate has attacked him.
A statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says that staff saw the stabbing happen in the recreation yard at Pleasant Valley State Prison just before 3:30 p.m. and were able to stop it by giving verbal orders.
Flores, 47, was hurt and taken to a medical facility outside of prison to get care. He later came back to the prison in fair condition, according to officials.
The prison official who was accused of the assault, whose name was not given, was put in restricted housing, the prison official said. The act is being looked into as an attempt to kill someone.
The department said that two guns that were likely made by prisoners were found. No one else on staff or in the prison was hurt.
In August, another prisoner cut Flores around the neck in the yard of the same statewide jail in Coalinga. Flores was taken to the hospital and then sent back to jail two days later.
Jason Budrow is the man who is accused of that attack. He has pleaded not guilty to felony charges that include attempted murder and assault by a prisoner serving a life term.
The police didn’t say what might have caused either attack.
Smart, a 19-year-old who went missing from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo over Memorial Day weekend in 1996, was killed by Flores. Flores is currently out on 25 years to life in prison.
Prosecutors said Flores killed Smart while trying to rape him in his college dorm room. Both Flores and Smart were first-year students. He was the last person seen with Smart after he took her home from a party off campus. No one ever found her body.
