A man in Florida was charged with aggravated battery after he reportedly choked and hit his girlfriend in the head with a vodka bottle and then ran away.
People who saw him chasing her were able to temporarily pin him to the ground “to prevent Joiner from causing more harm,” the Port Orange Police Department said on social media. He had tried to choke her with both his hands and a rope.
Police say Jeriel Joiner ran away and swam to an island in the Intracoastal Waterway off the Atlantic coast of the state on June 23.
Body camera film shows officers being taken to the island on a Florida Fish and Wildlife boat. Once they got there, they arrested Joiner who was hiding in a tent.
He was charged with felony violence, domestic battery by strangulation, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Police said it was likely that Joiner’s partner broke her arm in the fight.
