Limes Stone County, Alabama — From what the Alabama Department of Corrections knows, the director at Limestone Correctional Facility and his wife have been arrested and are being charged with drug crimes.
Warden Chadwick Crabtree and Melissa Crabtree were arrested at their home on Friday by SWAT officers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the ADOC, and the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. They were being held on several bench warrants.
Melissa and Chadwick Crabtree are being charged with second-degree illegal possession of marijuana, illegal possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing a controlled substance, and possession of drug tools. They were taken to jail in Limestone County.
The arrest of Chadwick Crabtree was linked to an event that happened in Limestone County on September 1, 2022, according to court records. According to the lawsuit, the charges have to do with making psilocybin mushrooms, which are a type of psychedelic mushroom.
The ADOC said, “[Chadwick] Crabtree has been put on Mandatory Leave without pay until further personnel action is taken.”
Chadwick Crabtree was born and raised in Elkmont and has worked for the ADOC for more than 20 years. The ADOC website says that he was a warden at the Birmingham Community Based Facility for women prisoners in the past. On the page, he is called “Warden III,” which is the highest rank an officer can have at a prison.
The ADOC said that its law enforcement branch also looked through Chadwick Crabtree’s prison office. The investigation is still going on, and officials have said that more charges may be coming.
