SCOTTSBORO, Alabama – This week, a girl in Alabama set up a lemonade stand to raise money for a good cause.
Emouree Johnson, 7, went to a homemade stand on Friday after school to sell lemonade. She wasn’t looking for a new toy or the hottest new clothes, but to help raise money for her mom’s gravestone.
The family says that Emouree’s mother, Karli Bordner, died suddenly in March.
Emouree’s grandma, Jennifer Bordner, said that the girl came up with the idea to raise money on her own.
“Emouree is really unique. If a lady over here was hurt, she would take something to help her,” Jennifer Bordner said.
As word got out on social media about Emouree’s cause, many people in the community rushed to help her.
Neighbors, firemen, nurses and deputies stopped by for a cup at $1 each, but many gave a bit extra as a tip for her hard work.
At one point in the afternoon, Johnson got multiple $100 bills from community members.
“I’m shocked. “Cried happy tears,” Amy Bordner said.
The family says that Emouree’s efforts to raise money helped raise almost $10,000.
Because memorial companies heard the family’s story, they want to help by giving Karli Bordner a headstone. The family can now use the money they raised to pay for other things.
“Like she knows mom is okay now.” The person who spoke said, “She knows she’ll be fine and that everyone loves and cares for her.” “All of these kind people who are trying to help are actually making the whole family better.”
Emouree said her mom would be happy, “Yeah. “She’d tell me I’m getting better.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise more money for the funeral costs.
