Woman Who Abandoned Newborn in Tote Bag in Bronx Surrenders to Police

LONGWOOD, Bronx(latestsports) — A new development has emerged in the search for the individual responsible for abandoning a newborn baby in a tote bag in the Bronx early Sunday morning. Police have released a video of a person they want to speak with regarding the incident, which occurred at approximately 6 a.m. on Reverend James Polite Avenue.

The video, captured at 5:36 a.m., shows a figure walking back and forth for two minutes before entering a driveway and leaving the baby in a tote bag on a doorstep. After placing the baby, the individual walks away in the same direction they came from.

The infant girl was found crying by a passerby who alerted authorities. A nearby resident, Mamadou Hafizjallow, who had been at a mosque at the time, received the call from his friend and rushed home to find the baby. Hafizjallow, not wanting to interfere with any potential evidence, initially hesitated but, concerned for the baby’s safety in the cold, decided to bring her inside.

“I called 911. It was cold, I put the baby inside, I didn’t want to mess with any evidence, but it was too cold, I had to take the baby from outside,” Hafizjallow said. “It’s amazing, I never thought something like this would happen in my life, but you know it’s life.”

The baby, who was found wrapped in a blanket inside the bag, was transported to Jacobi Hospital. Fortunately, the child is reported to be stable and is receiving care.

The home where the baby was found is located next to a nonprofit organization that provides a range of services to families in the community.

The NYPD is actively investigating the case, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish speakers, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

Authorities are hoping that the release of the video will lead to more information and help bring clarity to the situation, as they continue to search for the individual responsible for this disturbing act.
