Wisconsin Man Admits to Killing 8-Year-Old Stepson While Trying to 'Look Cool' With Gun

Lake Geneva, Wis. – A 53-year-old man has pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless homicide after admitting he fatally shot his 8-year-old stepson while showing off a handgun in an attempt to “look cool,” according to local officials.

Guilty Plea in Circuit Court

On Wednesday, Steven Merkel, 53, entered his guilty plea in Walworth County Circuit Court for the Jan. 20, 2025, shooting of his stepson, Michael Meagher. The case was investigated by the Town of Geneva Police Department and prosecuted by the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office.

Town supervisor Scott Williams said in a public statement that Merkel initially claimed the shooting was an accident but later admitted responsibility for Michael’s death.

The Fatal Night

Authorities say police and fire personnel responded to Merkel’s residence on Lincoln Drive around 2:25 a.m. on Jan. 20. Inside, they found Michael suffering from a single gunshot wound. Despite life-saving measures, he died later at a local hospital.

When questioned, Merkel appeared frantic and covered in blood, according to a criminal complaint. He told officers:

“I did something stupid, and it wasn’t Michael’s fault.”

Showing Off the Gun

Investigators say Merkel admitted he was trying to “look cool” while showing the child his 9 mm handgun. He claimed he had removed the magazine and believed the weapon would not fire.

However, after pointing the gun at Michael and pulling the trigger, it discharged.

“The defendant stated that he pulled the trigger and was expecting it to click, but instead it went ‘boom,’ shooting (Meagher),” the complaint said.

Police also learned that Merkel had shown the boy his gun on previous occasions, including pointing it at him and ordering him to listen.

Alcohol Involved

Merkel told investigators he had consumed “two little drinks of rum and RC” earlier that evening before handling the weapon. Police believe his reckless behavior, coupled with alcohol use, directly led to the tragic incident.

Remembering Michael

Friends and community members launched a GoFundMe to support Michael’s family, describing him as a “bright, funny boy.”

“Michael was 8 years old & a bright funny boy! My son loved his friend,” the fundraiser description read.

The death has left the Lake Geneva community shaken, with many calling the case a reminder of the dangers of improper firearm use.

Sentencing Ahead

Merkel is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 20, 2025, where he faces significant prison time for the reckless actions that killed his stepson.

Conclusion

The guilty plea underscores the devastating consequences of careless gun handling and the loss of an innocent child’s life. As Michael’s family grieves, prosecutors say the case is a reminder of the responsibility that comes with firearm ownership.
