Winter Weather Returns to Illinois: Snow Chances Rise and Dangerous Wind Chills Expected by Week’s End

Lincoln, IL – A brief midweek warm-up will give way to a sharp return to winter across central Illinois, with the National Weather Service warning of snow chances and potentially dangerous wind chills moving in by late week.

Warmer air will push temperatures into the 40s on Tuesday and Wednesday, offering a short break from the recent cold. Forecasters note a 40 percent chance of rain Tuesday night into Wednesday as breezy conditions develop across the region.

Midweek Warmth Will Be Short-Lived

The NWS reports that the mild stretch won’t last long. Colder air begins pushing back into Illinois on Thursday, dropping temperatures and increasing the potential for wintry conditions. Forecasters say there is a 30 percent chance of snow on Thursday, with light snow chances lingering into Friday as the colder pattern takes hold.

Temperatures Set to Plunge Again

Highs on Thursday and Friday are expected to fall into the upper 20s and low 30s. The bigger concern arrives after sunset, when nighttime lows dip into the single digits by Friday night. Wind chills could drop sharply, with forecast values ranging from 5 degrees below zero to as cold as 20 degrees below zero in certain areas.

The NWS emphasizes that these wind chill levels can increase the risk of frostbite, especially during early morning and evening hours.

Road Conditions May Shift Quickly

With rain expected early in the week and temperatures rapidly dropping later, residents should prepare for a wet-to-slick transition on roads. Forecasters caution that surfaces may freeze quickly once the colder air arrives.

“Rapid temperature drops can cause wet roads to become slick in a short period of time,” the agency noted in its discussion. Drivers are urged to monitor road conditions and plan for slow travel during potential snow or freeze periods.

What to Expect Through Friday

  • Tuesday–Wednesday: Highs in the 40s with breezy conditions
  • Tuesday night–Wednesday: 40 percent chance of rain
  • Thursday: Colder pattern returns with a 30 percent chance of snow
  • Friday: Light snow chances continue; highs in the 20s and 30s
  • Friday night: Lows in the single digits; wind chills between –5 and –20 degrees

How Residents Can Prepare

With shifting temperatures and precipitation types, the NWS recommends:

  • Checking local forecasts frequently
  • Allowing extra travel time during snow or freeze periods
  • Dressing in layers to reduce exposure risk during extreme wind chills
  • Keeping emergency supplies in vehicles, including blankets and ice scrapers

Winter weather may be settling in for another stretch, but early preparation can help reduce risks as the cold intensifies toward the end of the week.
