West Virginia Weather Alert: Northern Lights May Appear Tonight as Meteorological Fall Arrives

Charleston, W.Va. – Residents across West Virginia could witness a rare Northern Lights display tonight into Tuesday morning as meteorological fall begins. Those in the Kanawha Valley, Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, and surrounding areas are encouraged to head outdoors after sunset and look north for a potential aurora show.

Rare Aurora Display Possible

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a powerful solar storm caused by a coronal mass ejection could make the aurora visible far south of its usual northern range. Clear skies over much of the Mountain State may create ideal viewing conditions.

“The best viewing will occur in rural areas with minimal light pollution,” officials noted. “Depending on storm strength, the sky may glow green or red.”

Drivers along I-64 and U.S. 119 are advised to remain cautious, as patchy fog may develop after midnight, limiting visibility.

Comfortable Temperatures and Upcoming Weather

Temperatures will remain comfortable, with highs near 82 degrees Tuesday and light winds. However, clouds will increase midweek, bringing the chance of showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service reports storm chances rising to 70 percent by Thursday, which could affect outdoor plans and slow commutes across Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley. Residents are encouraged to limit nonessential travel on mountain roads prone to slick conditions and to keep devices charged in case of brief power outages.

Viewing Tips and Safety Precautions

For the best Northern Lights experience:

  • Head to rural areas with little to no light pollution.
  • Look north between sunset and early morning.
  • Keep phones and cameras ready for photos, but remain aware of local traffic and fog.

Weather alerts remain in effect through Tuesday morning, with updates expected if geomagnetic activity continues.
