Virtual pat-downs at airports – the innovative system the US TSA wants to screen you without touching your body

Goodbye to Enterprise Rent-A-Car – thousands of vehicles with expired registration remain in circulation, and hundreds of customers in the US have already been fined because of this negligence

Neither stars nor galaxies – what comes out of this black hole is so colossal that it is bigger than the Milky Way itself

Goodbye to this US airline – it abruptly suspended all operations and left thousands of passengers stranded at US airports without warning

Airports in the United States will use a new way of ppatting-down passengers soon! AAdvanced technology is reaching American airports, a new body pat-dwon technology is going to be developed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the

TSA (Transportation Security Administration)

. Omicrono published this innovation, which will be a 100% virtual pat-down by using facial recognition among many other techniques. Thanks to the development of artificial intelligence, airport security officers won’t have to touch passengers, making the airport security’s efficiency much better and respecting passengers’ privacy. Once again, technological innovation is stepping into a daily activity like going through an airport security check.

We are near to the future full of technology we always thought it would be since

airports security are getting more technological

. So, let’s see how this new way of airport pat-down works.

Airport security check

If you have ever taken a flight, you know the process of going through a security check is a chaotic experience that may make you nervous. What’s more, this process can be so slow and annoying when it’s full of people, you might even miss your flight!

This security check is done to see if you are hiding something that you shouldn’t bring to the airport. In this case, a scanner will warn airport security officers and they will start doing a body pat-down by touching the person who might be hiding something. This could be uncomfortable or even embarrassing for some passengers, I mean it’s not an easy situation.

Virtual pat-down

Don’t worry if you are one of these people who have a hard time with this situation because a new technological development is going to put an end to airport security officers touching your body. The DHS and the TSA are coming up with a virtual pat-down, thanks to artificial intelligence.

Officers will use virtual reality glasses to show a special image of passengers’ bodies and haptic gloves to ‘’feel’’ passengers without touching them. I know it sounds so weird, I mean, how is this possible?

How does this work?

This new technology will use sensors and special cameras to see what passengers are hiding under their clothes, by making a 3D image of their bodies and sending it to officers’ virtual reality glasses. Then they will use the haptic gloves to pat-down the virtual model of the image to see if they really are hiding something, passengers won’t be patted-down at no point.

Basically, this technology combines things that already exist and are used in a separate way, to create a helmet and gloves that could be easily carried around airports.

Technology used

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) this virtual pat-down system works thanks to millimeter waves scanning (used in current body scanners), LIDAR (used to guide autonomous vehicles) and backscatter X ray (to detect objects under the clothes).

These scanners can detect every object, no matter if they are metallic or not because the waves go through the clothes and bounce on hidden objects. Then, an image is created in which what it shouldn’t be there is highlighted.

Concerns about passengers privacy

From past experiences, people are concerned about getting virtually naked. That’s why the DHS has stated this new system will protect passengers’ privacy by incorporating three simple things:

  • Private parts will be blurry or covered on the image.
  • Officers are the only ones allowed to use the glasses.
  • There will be no screens in the presence of all people at the airport.

Is this system already working?

Well, it’s not implemented at American airports yet because it’s being developed. There’s no fixed date for virtual pat-down at airports everywhere, but the intention is to use this system to make security checks at airports much faster and more comfortable.

There will always be people who feel insecure with this system, but we need to think institutions are trying to come up with a balanced solution, so that every passenger is okay and also the technology does its job. What do you think about this new virtual pat-down?
