Virginia Beach Weather Alert: Flash Flood Warning in Effect Until 1 A.M. Friday

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for the Virginia Beach area and surrounding communities, effective until 1 a.m. Friday, as heavy rainfall leads to rapidly rising water and dangerous urban flooding conditions.

According to the National Weather Service warns of rainfall rates exceeding 1 to 2 inches per hour, which could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and flood streets, underpasses, and low-lying areas.

Dangerous Conditions: Roads, Parking Lots, and Basements at Risk

Residents are being advised to avoid travel overnight, as rising water may not be visible until it’s too late. The warning includes the risk of:

  • Street and underpass flooding
  • Road closures in coastal and low-elevation neighborhoods
  • Flooded basements and parking garages

“Do not drive through flooded roadways. It only takes six inches of water to stall a vehicle,”
the NWS advised in its bulletin.

Local Emergency Response on Standby

Crews from Virginia Beach Emergency Services have been deployed in flood-prone areas. Officials have placed temporary barriers and drainage pumps near key intersections as a preventive measure.

Areas at high risk include:

  • Shore Drive Corridor
  • Oceanfront district
  • Thalia and Princess Anne neighborhoods

Residents are also urged to move vehicles to higher ground and prepare for possible power outages as the storms continue.

Forecast Outlook: More Rain Ahead?

While the heaviest downpours are expected Thursday night, additional rainfall on Friday could prolong flood conditions into the weekend. The NWS recommends continued vigilance and monitoring local alerts.
