Two people of interest have been detained, according to Kalamazoo police, following the death of a 53-year-old man by a stray gunshot.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety reports that the two were taken into custody on unrelated charges. The specifics of the arrests and the people of interest were kept under wraps by the police.
Officers were dispatched to Interfaith Homes on Tuesday night in response to reports of gunfire and a shooting victim. There, they discovered many shot casings scattered around and a damaged automobile with bullet wounds in it.
KDPS reports that they discovered 53-year-old New Baltimore resident Mark Wayne Jackson lifeless after a gunshot wound in a neighboring apartment. After being brought to the hospital, he was declared dead, according to the police.
The guy, according to investigators, fired “multiple” rounds at a car before taking off. Inside the vehicle, nobody was hurt. But one of the bullets entered the apartment via the front door, striking and killing Jackson.
Jackson was visiting relatives at the apartment; according to KDPS Capt. Rafael Diaz, who had previously told News 8 that Jackson did not reside there. Jackson “had no interaction with what was occurring,” according to Diaz.
“He was an incredible individual who will be sincerely missed,” stated Alicia Jackson, the daughter of Mark Jackson. “This tragedy has claimed the lives of a friend, a brother, and a grandpa, in addition to a father.”
