Indianapolis, IN – Heavy rainfall from repeated rounds of thunderstorms is causing significant flooding concerns across parts of western and southwestern Indiana, with over 2 inches of rain already reported in some areas. The flooding threat is expected to continue into Monday night and early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Flood Watches in Effect for Multiple Counties
Flood watches remain active for Vigo, Sullivan, Greene, and Owen counties, where training storms—showers that pass repeatedly over the same areas—are increasing the risk of localized and areal flooding. The National Weather Service warns that rapid water rises are possible, particularly in low-lying areas and poorly drained roads.
“Repeated showers and thunderstorms will continue to train over the same areas,” the NWS said in a Monday afternoon advisory. “This will lead to the potential for additional flooding tonight.”
Road Closures and Dangerous Driving Conditions
Authorities are urging drivers to avoid flooded roadways and to respect barricades and closures. Local officials emphasize the life-threatening nature of floodwaters and remind residents that just a few inches of moving water can sweep vehicles away.
Drivers on major highways such as Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 41 are being told to stay alert as ponding and flash flooding may occur with little warning.
Impact on Schools and Businesses
As rain continues to fall, some schools and businesses in the affected counties may be forced to close early or suspend operations if conditions worsen. No widespread closures have been confirmed, but local authorities say decisions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
Emergency services are already responding to water rescues and stranded vehicles in parts of southwest Indiana, especially where drainage systems are overwhelmed.
More Rain Likely Overnight into Tuesday
The threat of flooding remains elevated into Tuesday morning, with more rain expected overnight. The atmosphere remains unstable, and forecasters say even isolated storms could exacerbate flooding in already saturated areas.
Residents are encouraged to:
- Keep emergency alerts activated on phones
- Check local news and weather apps regularly
- Have a flood safety plan in place, especially if living near creeks or rivers
