The South Carolina Highway Patrol says that a crash involving a car, a pickup truck, and an SUV killed one person and sent two others to the hospital on Friday.
Lance Cpl. Lena Butler said the accident involving several cars happened in Florence County at 6:55 a.m.
Butler said that a 2023 GMC Canyon pickup truck and a 2022 Kia Rio small car were both going south on U.S. 301. Butler said that a 2006 Lexus SUV going south on U.S. 301 crashed into both northbound cars near the intersection with South Wallace Road.
All three drivers were hurt and taken to a nearby hospital, where Butler says the Kia driver died.
The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not made the Kia driver’s name public. It was not possible to get more information about the conditions of the SUV and the truck driver.
Butler said that the drivers were the only ones in the three cars, and that no one else was hurt. No one said if any of the drivers had their seat belts on.
There was no information released about what caused the accident, but the Highway Patrol is still looking into it.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says that as of Wednesday, 334 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024. DPS said that 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina last year.
