Wichita County, Texas – A routine traffic stop along a major North Texas highway escalated into a significant drug bust this week, after deputies with the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office seized more than 100 pounds of marijuana and THC products from a single vehicle.
The arrest followed a stop conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit on U.S. Highway 287, underscoring how routine enforcement actions can uncover large-scale drug trafficking activity moving through the region.
Traffic Stop Turns Into Drug Investigation
According to the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a vehicle around noon on Wednesday, December 10, near the FM 1739 exit. The driver was identified as 38-year-old William Horhn, a resident of Cypress, Texas.
During the initial encounter, investigators noted inconsistencies in Horhn’s travel explanation. Deputies said Horhn initially told them he was returning from Amarillo, but later changed his account, claiming he had flown to California and was driving back.
Deputies also observed multiple pieces of luggage inside the vehicle, which raised additional suspicions during the stop.
K-9 Alert Prompts Vehicle Search
When deputies asked for permission to search the vehicle, Horhn reportedly refused. A K-9 unit was then deployed at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that the drug-detection dog alerted to the presence of narcotics, giving deputies probable cause to proceed with a search of the vehicle.
“After the K-9 alerted, deputies conducted a search and located multiple vacuum-sealed bags containing suspected marijuana,” the Sheriff’s Office reported.
More Than 100 Pounds of Drugs Discovered
Inside the vehicle, investigators found several vacuum-sealed packages filled with plant material that later tested positive for marijuana. Authorities said the marijuana alone weighed approximately 90 pounds.
In addition to the marijuana, deputies discovered a separate box labeled “THC Vapes.” Inside the box were containers of THC oils with a combined weight of just over 21 pounds.
Taken together, officials said the seizure totaled more than 100 pounds of marijuana-related products.
Charges and Bond Information
Following the discovery, Horhn was taken into custody and booked into the Wichita County Jail.
He faces multiple felony charges, including:
- Possession of marijuana over 50 pounds
- Possession of a controlled substance under 200 grams
Authorities confirmed that Horhn’s combined bond amount has been set at $125,000. Jail records indicate he remains in custody as the case moves through the legal process.
Drug Trafficking Route Concerns
U.S. Highway 287 is a well-traveled corridor connecting parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and the Texas Panhandle, and law enforcement agencies have long monitored it for drug trafficking activity.
Sheriff’s officials noted that criminal interdiction efforts along major highways play a critical role in disrupting the transport of illegal drugs before they reach local communities.
While marijuana laws vary across states, Texas continues to enforce strict penalties for large-scale possession and distribution, particularly when drugs are transported across long distances.
