Greenwood, SC – A routine patrol in eastern Greenwood County turned into a significant drug case this week after a deputy discovered marijuana, THC products, and a large quantity of psychedelic mushrooms inside an SUV, according to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident Summary
Authorities said the stop happened around 1:20 p.m. on Dec. 9, 2025, when a deputy noticed an SUV partially concealed at the end of a secondary road. As the deputy approached, a strong odor of marijuana reportedly came from inside the vehicle. One occupant acknowledged marijuana was present, leading to a probable-cause search.
What Deputies Found
During the search, the sheriff’s office said the deputy recovered 58.03 grams of marijuana split between two baggies and a box containing 332.80 grams of mushrooms. Deputies also located four packs of THC gummies, three containers of THC balls, a box of THC cartridges, and several empty vacuum-sealed bags believed to contain marijuana residue.
These items were seized as evidence while deputies questioned the individuals involved.
Occupant Takes Responsibility for Most Narcotics
Investigators reported that one of the occupants allegedly admitted ownership of all illegal narcotics except for a single bag of marijuana. Deputies said the second occupant only claimed possession of that single bag and was cited before being released at the scene.
Arrest and Charges
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the individual claiming responsibility for the majority of drugs was taken to the Greenwood County Detention Center. They now face charges including Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Schedule I & II.
Officials stated that additional charges could be added as the investigation continues.
Sheriff’s Office Response
The agency noted the importance of proactive patrols in identifying suspicious behavior and intercepting drug activity before it spreads further into neighborhoods.
The sheriff’s office stated, “Proactive enforcement remains one of the most effective tools we have to disrupt criminal narcotics activity in the county.”
Community Awareness
Local officials encourage residents to report suspicious vehicles, unusual activity on secondary roads, or abandoned cars in rural areas. Situations like this, authorities say, often begin with small observations that lead to major discoveries.
Conclusion
The investigation remains active as deputies continue reviewing evidence collected from the SUV and statements from both occupants.
