Bismarck, ND – A Tornado Watch has been issued across south-central North Dakota and north-central South Dakota, with severe storms expected to bring tornadoes, giant hail, and destructive 70 mph winds through 10 PM Tuesday. The alert has prompted emergency preparedness warnings from officials across both states.
Widespread Weather Threat Across Multiple Counties
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center warns that conditions are favorable for tornado development, hail up to 2 inches, and wind gusts exceeding 70 mph. Affected counties in North Dakota include Burleigh, Emmons, Kidder, and Morton, while Brown, Dewey, Hughes, and Stanley counties are impacted in South Dakota.
“These storms could rapidly intensify and produce dangerous weather impacts across a large area,” officials said Tuesday afternoon.
Power Outages and Travel Hazards Anticipated
Emergency officials are urging residents to limit non-essential travel, particularly along US-83 and US-12, where visibility and road safety may deteriorate rapidly. The fast-moving storms could bring widespread power outages, especially in rural and exposed areas.
Residents in cities such as Bismarck, Pierre, Aberdeen, Jamestown, and Mobridge are being told to keep devices fully charged and have flashlights and emergency supplies on hand.
Large Hail, Damaging Winds Likely
Forecasters say the storms may generate hailstones large enough to damage vehicles, windows, and rooftops. Winds up to 70 mph could uproot trees, snap power lines, and create hazardous conditions for both drivers and pedestrians.
“If you’re in the affected area, be prepared to shelter quickly,” warned the National Weather Service.
School Schedules and Outdoor Activities Disrupted
With storms moving quickly across the plains, school districts and local organizations are monitoring the weather for possible delays or cancellations. Outdoor sports and evening events may be postponed due to rapidly shifting weather patterns.
Areas stretching from Jamestown to Faith are at risk, and weather alerts may continue into the night as the system moves eastward.
Stay Informed and Take Precautions
Officials continue to stress the importance of staying weather-aware throughout the evening. Use NOAA Weather Radio or trusted local news outlets for real-time updates. If a Tornado Warning is issued, move immediately to an interior room or basement in a sturdy building.
