Three Guys From Virginia Are Being Charged With Roofing Fraud in San Mateo County

SAN MATEO – Police in San Mateo County say that three men from Virginia were involved in a roofing scam that scammed older people on the Peninsula out of money.

The San Mateo Police Department says that a probe began in November 2023. Investigators found out that a fake building company called “Statewide Roofing and Siding” was run by a group of men who said they had “Irish accents.”

Police said the suspects used a fake contractor’s license, did work that probably wasn’t needed, and charged too much for work that wasn’t done.

Police said that investigators worked with other police stations in San Mateo County to find more people who had been scammed in the same way.

San Mateo police got a report on May 7 from another victim who said he thought the company he hired to fix the roof on his mom’s house was ripping him off.

The victim said that the company first thought that small repairs were needed after a “free” inspection. In the end, the company said that more work needed to be done and finally said that the whole roof should be replaced.

Police found out that the suspects had made up names and used a different business name, “Teco Roofing and Masonry.” The following day, cops called all three suspects and arrested them. They were all taken to the San Mateo County Jail and booked.

Charlie Anderson, 22, David Anderson, 39, and Darren Temple, 40, are the people who are suspected. Each of the three guys lives in Herndon, Virginia, which is a suburb of Washington, DC.

Police said that the suspects are being charged with conspiracy, theft from an older or dependent adult, getting money by lying, and illegal use of a contractor’s license.

Records from the San Mateo County Jail show that all three guys are still there as of Thursday. Their next court date is set for May 22.

Thursday, the police said they are looking for more victims. Officer Thornburg of the San Mateo Police Department can be reached at 650-522-7650 by anyone who may have had work done on their roof by these companies.
