MOBILE, Alabama – As the fentanyl crisis continues, police are warning that a new type that is even more dangerous has arrived in Alabama.
There was a drug bust in Shelby County, and the Drug Task Force said they found para-fluoro fentanyl, which is a more dangerous drug than pure fentanyl.
Virginia Guy, who runs the Drug Education Council, said that this problem affects everyone.
Guy said, “Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine.” “This new type of fentanyl is stronger than fentanyl itself.” It’s so terrible and dangerous for all of us.
In their report for the fiscal year 2022–2023, the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office said that fentanyl accidents were the main reason people died.
Guy says that fentanyl doesn’t just kill people; it kills friends, family, moms, and husbands.
The CDC says that two milligrams of fentanyl could kill you. That’s not even as big as Abraham Lincoln on a penny, but it will need even less with this strain.
Guy said, “It’s so easy to get in touch with it if you’re around it.” “You could breathe it in or touch it by accident.” It’s dangerous for all of us. Families are in danger. Everyone in your family who uses fentanyl is putting your family in danger when they come into your home. It puts our service business and healthcare workers at risk.
Guy told FOX10 that people should be careful when buying things that aren’t from a drugstore.
Chief John Barber of the Spanish Fort Police Department said that people who are dying aren’t just taking drugs on purpose.
Barber said, “Most of the time, they are taking it on purpose, but sometimes they are making it work with other drugs.” “It can be mixed with heroin, THC, and vapes.” It can be added to marijuana to make it taste better. What we’re seeing is a mix of people who are trying to take it on purpose and people who are just being given it because they thought they were doing something else.
Barber told FOX10 that he has worked on these cases of terrible fentanyl overdoses. He said that this can happen to anyone, no matter who they are or how they look.
Guy said that the Gulf Coast area could be a major hub for selling this dangerous drug.
“Here in Mobile, we’re right where I-10 and I-65 meet. Both of those are known as drug corridors,” she said. “We need to be very careful, and so does our police force. They could come across this stuff during a normal traffic stop.” It’s just so dangerous.
