DALLAS, TX – A Texas woman, Keona Hampton, allegedly shot and killed Cecilia Simpson, 41, in a Five Below parking lot after a heated argument over Simpson holding a door open for Hampton, who didn’t say “thank you.” The tragic incident occurred in front of Simpson’s 20-year-old daughter, who witnessed the entire event, leaving the young woman deeply traumatized.
The Confrontation That Escalated Quickly
According to local police, Simpson had been exiting the Five Below store in the 3500 block of West Wheatland in the southeast Oak Cliff area of Dallas when she held the door open for Hampton, a 22-year-old shopper. However, Hampton walked inside without acknowledging the gesture. This upset Simpson, who confronted Hampton about the lack of courtesy, leading to a verbal dispute between the two women.
After the altercation, Simpson and her daughter walked to their car and drove to PetSmart, a nearby store in the same shopping center. Hampton reportedly followed them, and the argument resumed inside PetSmart, resulting in both women being asked to leave the store.
The Fatal Shooting in the Parking Lot
Once outside in the parking lot, Simpson and her daughter tried to leave the scene, but Hampton allegedly threw a drink bottle at their vehicle. Simpson exited the car and confronted Hampton, reportedly striking her physically and yelling at her to leave them alone.
That’s when Hampton allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at Simpson, hitting her several times. Simpson collapsed, and the shooting occurred right in front of her daughter, who was left hysterical and in shock.
Police and Witness Statements
A witness, who was an ER nurse and tried to perform life-saving measures on Simpson, described the scene as chaotic and deeply disturbing. “The mother and daughter tried to get in the car to de-escalate the situation but the lady wasn’t having it,” the witness said. “They started to fight, and that’s when the lady pulled out her gun and shot her.”
The witness also mentioned the emotional trauma of hearing the screams of the daughter: “It’s hard, you know, because the screaming of a child for her mother is never easy and it’s never going to leave my head.”
Hampton’s Arrest and Self-Defense Claim
After the shooting, Hampton allegedly fled the scene in her vehicle. Surveillance video captured the incident, and police used Hampton’s license plate to track her down. She was arrested later that evening following a traffic stop.
In her statement to police, Hampton claimed that the confrontation escalated to the point where she shot Simpson in self-defense, saying that she had to defend herself from Simpson’s physical attack. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the self-defense claim will stand.
Community Shock and the Impact on Simpson’s Family
The tragic killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing disbelief over how a minor dispute escalated into such a deadly outcome. Cecilia Simpson’s family is mourning her loss, especially the daughter, who witnessed her mother’s murder and is now coping with the emotional aftermath of the incident.
