SAN ANTONIO, TX – A Texas man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after brutally beating his girlfriend’s brother to death in front of her — while FaceTiming his mother and son during the assault, authorities said.
Sentencing and Plea Deal
Robert Carrasco, 40, accepted a plea deal and was sentenced this week for the murder of 38-year-old Jason Banda, according to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office. The killing occurred in April 2024, though prosecutors say tension between the men had existed for years.
Background of the Conflict
In February 2022, Carrasco assaulted his girlfriend — who was Banda’s sister — and was charged for the attack. He pleaded guilty and was released on probation, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Months later, in September 2022, Carrasco violated the terms of his probation, and Banda was reportedly involved in getting him re-arrested, sending Carrasco back to jail.
The Fatal Confrontation
After being released on bond in March 2024, Carrasco allegedly held a grudge against Banda. In April 2024, the two men had a confrontation in which Carrasco approached Banda about having him arrested. According to prosecutors, he then brutally beat and killed Banda in front of his sister.
Initially, Banda’s sister told authorities her brother “had been jumped,” but she later admitted that Carrasco had murdered him, the DA’s office said.
FaceTime Evidence
During the assault, Carrasco reportedly FaceTimed his mother and son, who witnessed the attack in real time. Carrasco’s mother reported the incident to authorities, prompting investigators — including the county’s medical examiner — to return to the scene for additional testing. While details of any new findings have not been disclosed, this evidence played a role in building the case against him.
Remembering Jason Banda
Banda is remembered in his obituary as “a kind and generous man that helped everyone he could.” Friends and family mourn his loss, saying, “Jay, you will be missed tremendously and you will forever live in the hearts of everyone that met you.”
