In Tennessee, police must now check the identity of people they are detaining and tell the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference if they find someone who is in the country illegally.
Sen. Bill 757 was signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee on Tuesday. It starts on July 1.
It is one of two bills that Sen. Ferrell Haile, R-Gallatin, said will help Tennessee fight the federal government over the costs of illegal immigration.
The other one, House Bill 2774, was already signed by Lee.
Senate Bill 757 says that local police must check a detainee’s identity and report them to the DAGC if they are found to be in the country illegally.
If someone is arrested, they will need to show a valid passport, a green card or student visa, a Tennessee driver’s license or a photo ID, and either a Social Security card or number or a birth certificate or proof of naturalization from the United States.
A clause was added to the law that lets police decide if someone is homeless in the United States even if they don’t have the right paperwork.
