Suspect Still at Large After Multi-Agency Drug Bust Seizes Large Quantities of Narcotics in Alexander County

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. – A months-long narcotics investigation in Alexander County has led to the seizure of large quantities of illegal drugs, firearms, and cash, with one suspect arrested and another still being sought by authorities.

Local and state law enforcement agencies confirmed that deputies executed multiple search warrants following a four-month investigation into drug trafficking activity centered in Taylorsville. The operation involved coordinated efforts from the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lenoir Police Department.

Multi-Agency Investigation Targets Drug Distribution Network

According to officials, the investigation focused on the sale and distribution of narcotics within Alexander County. Detectives gathered intelligence over several months before executing three separate search warrants at properties located along Willie McLeod Road.

Authorities say the locations were believed to be connected to a local drug distribution operation supplying multiple controlled substances within the community.

Significant Quantities of Drugs and Weapons Seized

During the execution of the search warrants, investigators recovered a substantial amount of illegal narcotics, including:

  • 6.6 pounds of methamphetamine
  • 2.4 pounds of cocaine
  • 2.7 pounds of marijuana
  • 7 grams of fentanyl
  • 5 grams of psychedelic mushrooms

In addition to the drugs, deputies seized U.S. currency, firearms, and illegal non-tax-paid moonshine. Law enforcement officials estimated the combined street value of the seized items at approximately $61,000.

Authorities emphasized that the presence of fentanyl and high-volume methamphetamine posed a significant risk to public safety, noting the ongoing dangers associated with synthetic opioids and large-scale drug trafficking.

One Arrest Made, Second Suspect Sought

As a result of the investigation, Bradley Smith, 49, of Taylorsville, was taken into custody. He has been charged with multiple counts of drug trafficking and possession related to the seized narcotics.

Smith is currently being held at the Alexander County Detention Center under a $1.5 million secured bond, according to jail records.

Investigators confirmed that a second suspect remains at large.

Authorities Searching for Second Suspect

Law enforcement agencies are actively searching for Nathan Smith, 36, also of Taylorsville, who is believed to be connected to the drug operation uncovered during the investigation.

The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward. Tips can be submitted directly by calling (828) 632-2911, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at (828) 632-8555.

Officials stressed that public assistance can be critical in locating suspects and preventing further criminal activity.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Safety Concerns

Authorities stated that the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges or arrests may follow as detectives continue reviewing evidence and pursuing leads.

Sheriff’s officials highlighted that drug trafficking investigations often extend beyond initial arrests, as financial records, digital evidence, and additional connections are analyzed. Residents in the area were reassured that law enforcement presence would remain heightened as the case develops.

Law enforcement leaders also reminded the public about the dangers posed by illegal narcotics, particularly fentanyl, which has been linked to a growing number of overdose deaths across North Carolina and nationwide.

How Residents Can Help

Officials encourage community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. Anonymous tips are welcomed, and authorities emphasized that even small details can help disrupt illegal drug operations.
