Homicide Marks Grim Milestone, But Crime Is Down in Baltimore
Though the 100th homicide marks a somber point in the year, Baltimore has seen notable improvements in crime reduction. According to data from the Mayor’s Office, the city reached its 100th homicide later this year than in previous years. In 2024, the city reached 100 homicides by mid-July, and in 2023, it reached that number by May. In 2022 and 2023, the city recorded 100 homicides as early as April.
However, homicides and non-fatal shootings have decreased by 50% since 2023, signaling some positive trends. As of October 1, 2025, Baltimore had recorded 103 homicides and 244 non-fatal shootings.
Progress in Reducing Violence
The reduction in violence has been particularly notable this year, with homicides declining by 30% and non-fatal shootings down by 20% in September 2025 alone. Mayor Brandon Scott acknowledged the city’s progress in a statement, noting that the decline in violence “serves as a reminder both of how far we’ve come and how much more work we have ahead.”
The police and local government remain committed to continuing efforts to reduce crime further, with ongoing community programs, policing initiatives, and collaboration with local organizations.
Community Reaction and Future Efforts
Despite the improvements, the tragic death of Michael Schuler has left many in the community grieving. Local residents continue to express concerns about safety and the challenges ahead in further reducing violent crime in the city. As the city moves forward with its ongoing efforts to combat crime, community engagement remains a key element in ensuring that these positive trends continue.
