Three family members were killed when a tree struck their vehicle in Michigan as heavy storms swept through the area, according to police, and more potentially dangerous weather was anticipated for areas of the Southeast on Monday.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office reported three additional persons were hospitalized with injuries, one of whom was in severe condition. The collision occurred on Sunday in Climax Township, roughly 130 miles (209 kilometers) west of Detroit. It was under investigation.
Kalamazoo County was under a severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service at the time, one of four issued in southern Michigan on Sunday.
Poweroutage.us reported over 400,000 power outages in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Crews from DTE Energy in Michigan were trying to restore service.
Storms in Elkhart, Indiana, wrecked a warehouse on Sunday. No injuries were recorded. WSBT-TV has reported.
Storm damage has been recorded in numerous Tennessee counties, including Maury and Humphreys, according to WSMV-TV. Chris Davis, Humphreys County Sheriff, reported damage throughout the county, including the removal of a house’s roof. The homeowners were confined inside but were not hurt.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, thunderstorm clusters with strong to severe wind gusts and possibly a few tornadoes could spread across much of the Southeast on Monday.
