Aiken County, SC – A tragic domestic violence case concluded this week as Daniel Harmon, 36, was sentenced for the murder and kidnapping of his ex-girlfriend, authorities confirmed. The victim, Jamilla Smith, 30, was pursued and ultimately killed while attempting to alert 911 dispatchers about the life-threatening situation.
Deadly Pursuit and 911 Call
The incident began on December 2, 2023, when Smith called 911 to report a domestic violence incident involving Harmon along Interstate 20. Hours later, shortly after 8:30 p.m., Smith placed another call to dispatchers, stating that Harmon had broken into her home and was chasing her.
Dispatchers heard engine revving and Smith screaming. During the call, Harmon allegedly told Smith to get into his vehicle under the pretense of taking her to an emergency room. Smith refused and reported being run over before the call abruptly ended.
“She repeatedly refused the man’s entreaties, eventually exclaimed that he had run her over with his vehicle, and said she was in pain before the 911 call ended,” the criminal complaint affidavit stated.
Investigation and Arrest
Authorities tracked a Dodge Charger rented by Harmon, discovering Smith’s blood in the trunk, though her body remained missing at the time. Harmon was arrested three days after the incident.
Months later, in May 2024, Smith’s remains were discovered in a wooded area near the 2100 block of Silver Bluff Road in Aiken. An autopsy confirmed she had died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
Sentencing and Family Impact
On Friday, Harmon pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping, receiving 45 years in prison for murder and 30 years for kidnapping, with the sentences to run consecutively.
Family members expressed deep pain during the sentencing.
“It still hurts, but I’m relieved that it’s finally come to an end,” Smith’s grandmother said. “We’ve been suffering for over two years, so I’m glad that this decision was finally made today.”
Smith’s mother acknowledged the verdict but questioned whether justice was sufficient:
“I am happy that the deal did go through, but I don’t know – it still doesn’t feel enough – not enough for her life.”
Harmon offered an apology in court:
“I deep down apologize to all six, seven family members or families that have been hurt from this. If y’all can, I just ask that y’all forgive me in Jesus name, amen.”
Smith’s mother remained unconvinced:
“He doesn’t seem remorseful. He tried to say sorry, but his actions don’t say sorry. It shattered our lives.”
Community and Legal Reflection
The case underscores the dangers of domestic violence escalations and the critical importance of prompt law enforcement intervention. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspected threats and to take immediate precautions if personal safety is at risk.
