Mint Butterfield, the teenage daughter of Stewart Butterfield, a wealthy co-founder of Slack, and Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr, was last seen almost a week ago.
Mint Butterfield, 16, is the daughter of Slack’s wealthy co-founder Stewart Butterfield. They were last seen alive in San Francisco, almost a week after going missing.
Researchers say that the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and the San Francisco Police Department found Mint, who uses they/them pronouns. Stewart, Mint’s mother, Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, and stepdad, fellow tech founder Jyri Engestrom, wrote an email to the press about this.
A spokesman for the Marin County Sheriff’s Office named Adam Schermerhorn told the San Francisco Standard that Mint was found on the evening of April 27.
“A heartfelt thanks to all the family, friends, volunteers, and strangers who called in tips and made this recovery possible,” the family wrote in a message, seen by the San Francisco Standard. “We especially want to thank the seasoned law enforcement officers who understand the very real threat of predators who use the allure of drugs to groom teenagers.”
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said in an earlier press release on Thursday, April 25, that Mint was a “voluntary missing person.”
Fake first said the teen was missing when he found a note on April 22 morning that said Mint had left.
The last time anyone saw the teen was in Bolinas, California, on April 21, around 10 p.m. Schermerhorn had told PEOPLE before that the police “do not have any reason to believe there is foul play” or “anything criminal” going on with Mint’s disappearance.
“Mint left the area without a vehicle or phone, so it is not clear how they did it,” police said in a press statement. “We have no reason to think that Mint was taken against their will right now.” Mint is “At risk” because she has made a suicide threat in the past, so the Sheriff’s Office thinks she is a voluntary missing minor.
Based on what the teen’s mother had said, police thought Mint might have gone to the Tenderloin District of San Francisco, which is about 30 miles away from where she was last seen in Bolinas.

Stewart stopped working for Slack in 2022, but a business magazine says he is worth $1.6 billion.
