Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Eastern South Dakota, Damaging Winds and Hail Expected Overnight

Sioux Falls, SD – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for 35 counties in eastern South Dakota, including Minnehaha, Brown, Brookings, and Lincoln. The watch will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday, with damaging winds up to 70 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning expected to impact the region overnight.

Storms Move Quickly Across Eastern South Dakota

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the storm watch zone stretches across eastern and central South Dakota, impacting communities from Aberdeen to Sioux Falls. As the storms move quickly eastward, they pose significant risks to drivers, especially on Interstates 29 and 90, as well as rural highways.

Potential for Power Outages and Hazardous Travel

Power outages are a possibility as strong gusts and lightning strike the region, putting the electrical grid under strain. Emergency officials have advised residents to charge phones, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel until the storms weaken after sunrise.

Cities at Risk for Flooding and Intense Rain

Cities like Watertown, Mitchell, and Yankton are also at risk for intense downpours and brief flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch could be extended if the storms continue to hold together into Saturday morning.

Stay Alert for Updates

Warnings will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday, and residents should stay alert for further updates from local weather authorities.
