Several people from a youth group in Utah were taken to the hospital Thursday after lightning hit the ground next to where they were camping.
The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office said that around 1:45 p.m., it started to rain while a Salina Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints youth group was hiking in the eastern part of Sevier County.
The sheriff’s office said that 50 of the kids felt “the shock of the lightning” when it hit the ground near them and ran into the water.
Seven people in the youth group had “some medical concerns due to electrocution,” according to the sheriff’s office. They were taken by ambulance to hospitals in Salina to get help for their injuries.
The sheriff’s office said that two of the kids had “some serious symptoms” and were taken to First Children’s Hospital in Lehi. It didn’t tell us anything else about their conditions.
Officials say the other five were taken to two different hospitals.
The sheriff’s office said that none of the kids who were taken to hospitals are likely to have injuries that could kill them.
Police said that the rest of the group was found and taken back to Salina, where they were reunited with their parents. Not a single one of those kids said they were sick.
Salt Lake City is 167 miles away from Sevier County.
