Santa Ana, CA – A grieving family in Orange County is demanding justice after their beloved dog Max was shot multiple times by police officers, ultimately leading to the animal being euthanized due to his injuries.
Domestic Call Turns Tragic
The incident occurred on July 30 when Santa Ana police responded to a family dispute at a home on Orange Avenue. According to the dog’s owner, officers arrived just as Max, a large family dog, exited the home alongside family members.
“He came out of the home and he is very curious. Max is very curious,” said Luz Vega, a family member. “I don’t know if the officer felt threatened by his size… but he just started shooting. He didn’t give us a chance to put the dog inside.”
Surveillance Footage Raises Questions
Surveillance video shared the police unit arriving and the dog walking toward the front yard with people nearby. Officers are seen backing away and then pointing what appears to be a gun in the dog’s direction.
Seconds later, shots were fired.
The family claims that Max, who was well-known in the neighborhood and had never shown signs of aggression, was not threatening the officers.
Police Cite Safety Concerns
Santa Ana Police Department spokesperson Nathalie Garcia stated that officers encountered a “very aggressive dog,” which prompted one officer to discharge his weapon.
“Him being aggressive? No, he was not,” Vega countered. “He has never bit anyone. He was always around kids, most kids.”
Police said Max was taken to an animal hospital in stable condition, but did not confirm how many times the dog was shot or provide further details on the threat assessment.
Difficult Decision for the Family
Despite initial signs of survival, Max’s injuries were too severe. The family ultimately had to make the painful decision to euthanize him, stating that he was in too much suffering to recover.
“We just couldn’t watch him in pain anymore,” the family shared. “He was a part of our family.”
Investigation Ongoing
The Santa Ana Police Department confirmed that the incident is still under investigation, and officers are reportedly in contact with the family regarding the shooting.
The case has sparked community outrage, with many calling for accountability and transparency in the handling of animals during police calls.
