San Antonio Attorney Arrested for Drunk Driving and Drug Possession

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Daniel Mehler, a well-known San Antonio defense attorney who brands himself as the “dopest lawyer in town”, was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence and drug possession, according to local authorities.

Arrest and Charges

Police say Mehler was drunkenly driving in his girlfriend’s neighborhood on Friday, October 3, while carrying an undisclosed amount of a controlled substance. He was later booked into the Bexar County Jail on Saturday, October 4, and charged with:

  • Misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
  • Felony Drug Possession (less than 20 units of a Schedule 1-A drug)

Schedule 1-A drugs, according to the DEA, include substances such as LSD, cannabis, ecstasy, and heroin, all of which are classified as having high abuse potential and no currently accepted medical use.

Details of the Incident

According to a warrant obtained by MySA, police were called after Mehler’s girlfriend refused to speak with him. Officers reported that Mehler had been driving around the neighborhood and throwing items at the house. When police arrived, he was standing outside and claimed that his girlfriend was ignoring him.

Despite his claims of a speech impediment, officers noted several signs of intoxication, including:

  • Strong odor of alcohol
  • Slurred and confused speech
  • Glassy and blood-shot eyes
  • Inability to maintain balance

Mehler refused a field sobriety test, prompting officers to request a blood draw, which was conducted at 2:07 a.m. on Saturday. He was booked into jail at 12:51 p.m. and released on bail by 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

Past Legal Issues

This is not Mehler’s first run-in with the law. In July 2024, he was arrested and charged with:

  • Sexual Assault
  • Family Violence
  • Violating a Protective Order

All charges were dismissed by March 2025 due to insufficient evidence.

Public and Legal Implications

As a defense attorney known for representing clients charged with drug offenses, Mehler’s arrest has drawn local attention. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, but no further details have been released at this time.

The case raises questions about substance abuse, public safety, and the legal accountability of professionals who represent the law while facing criminal charges themselves.
