Whether you have a family pet or a full ranch of animal companions, seeing them happy is quite magical. Our four-legged pals excel at staying present and enjoying the simple things, so keeping them happy may be easier than you think. However, their excitement is always worth going above and above!
The animal rescues and volunteers at @thegentlebarn understand what it’s like to see an animal thrive under their care. Lewis the cow is one of dozens of rescued animals at their sanctuaries in California and Tennessee, and they’ve seen him grow from a curious calf to a confident steer. This California cow has always enjoyed playing with pals of all sorts, but a heartwarming December 7 throwback video of him chasing his Australian Shepherd bestie reminded viewers that cows are just like ‘giant puppies,’ too.
I cannot get enough of these two! Lewis was only a baby calf when this video was shot—maybe 3 or 4 years ago—but he maintains the same fun nature as an adult. However, he has grown quite a bit! He was a house pet when he was younger, which is why he’s romping around the backyard in this retro footage, but he wouldn’t fit through the door today.
As heartwarming as Lewis’ rescue story is, his connection with the athletic Australian Shepherd makes the ‘tail’ even cuter. The rescue animal gained a fresh lease on life, while his canine best friend acquired the ultimate playmate and comrade! Commenters are equally as enamored with the couple as I am, saying, “This is lovely to see. “Lewis is having fun!”
My best anecdote came from commenter @sandman3021, who wrote, “My cow Buddy just follows me and my dogs around the property helping on projects, lol.” That seems like a dream come true!
Why Do Dogs Get Along with Everyone?
This affectionate Australian Shepherd welcomed Lewis to his foster home while he recovered from a difficult rescue. They were fast friends as the calf grew older, but this is only one of many anecdotes about interspecies friendship. Many dogs get along with cats, humans, cows, horses, and other farm animals, but what makes them so friendly?
Dogs are pack animals, which means they seek companionship and protection in groups, but they will also look for friendship outside of their species. Not all dogs are as naturally kind and accepting of other animals, but many puppies, such as this energetic Aussie, like making friends of all shapes and sizes.
