Prosecutor's Office Confirms Two Fatalities, Nine Injuries in Kearny Collision

KEARNY, NJ —

A tragic multi-vehicle crash early Friday morning on the Newark-Jersey City Turnpike in Kearny has resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on May 16, Kearny Police responded to reports of a serious collision near 490 Newark-Jersey City Turnpike. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a BMW sedan and a Ford Transit van had been involved in the crash.

The male driver of the BMW and a female passenger sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m. The identities of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Nine individuals were involved in the collision, with several transported to local hospitals for treatment. One driver suffered serious head trauma and was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he is currently in stable condition. The conditions of the other individuals have not been disclosed.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Kearny Police Department are actively investigating the incident. No arrests have been made at this time.

This incident marks the second fatal crash in Kearny in recent months. In March, a rollover crash on Route 508 resulted in one death and several injuries. The investigation into that crash is ongoing.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office continues to urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws to prevent such tragedies.

The names of the victims are being withheld pending identification and notification of next of kin, Suarez said.

The transit van contained nine occupants from Canada and New York, Suarez said. All nine occupants were hospitalized with one person in critical but stable condition, Suarez said.

The crash remains under investigation, Suarez said.
