HARRISON, New York— A small plane crashed along I-684 in Westchester County, New York, on Thursday night, killing one person.
Two people were on board the plane when it crashed in the town of Harrison around 7 p.m. local time, according to the New York State Police. The plane touched down in a patchy area between the highway’s north and south lanes.
The victim’s name was not made public, and the status of the second person on the plane was not given right away. There was no news of anyone on the ground getting hurt.
FlightAware says the pilot took off from New Jersey’s Linden Airport and was going to Westchester County Airport, which is about 1.5 miles from where the plane crashed.
FlightAware says that the plane is owned by Altisky Leasing One LLC, which is based in Smyrna, Tennessee.
New York State Police said that the highway was closed at Exit 2 for northbound traffic and at Exit 3 for southbound traffic. They also said that local routes would be used instead. People were told to stay away from the area.
In a statement, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said that the crash also caused an aviation gas spill that the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation was trying to soak up and clean up.
She said, “My heart goes out to the loved ones of those on board during this tragic incident, and I am praying for a safe recovery for the injured individual.”
