A woman was killed Tuesday after being struck by a U-Haul driver who allegedly fled the scene of an earlier crash in Philadelphia, police said.
The incident began around 4:30 p.m. at Kensington and Allegheny Avenues with a minor collision. Both drivers exited their vehicles, but the U-Haul driver got back in the truck and fled toward the 1800 block of East Cambria Street in Kensington.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said the driver lost control after turning onto Cambria, jumped the curb, and struck a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk. The U-Haul then crashed through a fence before coming to a stop against the side of a home. No one inside was injured.
Nearby witness Marissa Floyd described the moment as “absolutely terrifying,” adding that she felt the ground shake when the truck hit the building.
Thanks to witnesses from the first crash, officers from the 24th district located the 28-year-old driver and apprehended him after a two-block foot chase. The U-Haul’s passenger was also taken into custody.
The victim, described as a woman between 40 and 50 years old, has not yet been identified.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 215-686-TIPS.
