Philadelphia Braces for Heavy Rain Thursday — Flash Flooding and Isolated Wind Damage Expected

People in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland should get ready for widespread thunderstorms Thursday afternoon through the night. There is a greater chance of flash flooding, especially in cities and low-lying areas.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly says that storms will bring rain at rates of more than 2 inches per hour. It will likely rain 2 to 4 inches, and in some places it could rain more than 6 inches. The most dangerous area is the Moderate Risk (Level 3 of 4) area, which includes Philadelphia, Wilmington, Trenton, Baltimore, and towns nearby.

During heavy rain, drivers should stay off of roads that are likely to flood, such as I-95, Route 1, and smaller streets in cities. It’s possible that creeks, streams, and areas with poor drainage will flood quickly, especially near cities. Emergency managers tell people to keep their things safe, keep an eye on alerts, and stay home during the worst parts of the storm.

In the afternoon and early evening, there is also a chance of wind damage in certain areas, but floods is still the biggest worry. This makes the Mid-Atlantic one of the most likely places to flood this summer.

As things change, more alerts and advisories might be sent out. Keep an eye out for updates all day Thursday.
