Lancaster, PA – A 56-year-old Pennsylvania man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and leaving their young son alone with her body for several hours. Douglas Wayne Snyder faces charges of intentional homicide and endangering the welfare of a child in the death of 38-year-old Samantha Lynn Fields, authorities said.
Shooting Incident and 911 Call
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, troopers responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a residence in the 1400 block of New Valley Road around 10:30 a.m. Monday. First responders found Fields suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Snyder reportedly placed a 911 call on Sunday morning, stating that the shooting had occurred the previous evening. When questioned by troopers, he allegedly admitted to shooting his wife, but claimed it was an accident:
“I guess I shot her by accident. I honest to god did not just shoot my wife,” Snyder said.
Details from the Investigation
Charging documents obtained by WHP Harrisburg revealed more about the events leading to the fatal shooting. Snyder described an argument with Fields, during which she struck him in the back of the head with a book:
“She threw the book at me from at least 10 feet away. I was pissed, I turned around, snapped and I shot her,” Snyder reportedly told investigators.
After the shooting, Snyder left the home for approximately 13 hours, leaving his son alone with Fields’ body.
Impact on the Child
The couple’s son informed police that when he went to bed Saturday night, both of his parents were fine, but upon waking, he discovered his mother dead, according to WGAL Lancaster. Authorities say the child witnessed the aftermath of the incident, which has prompted concern over the emotional trauma inflicted.
Legal Proceedings
Snyder is being held at Perry County Prison. He appeared in court for his arraignment on September 15, where a judge denied bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 23, court records show.
Community Reaction
Friends of Fields started a GoFundMe page, describing her as a loving mother and victim of domestic violence:
“Sam was a beautiful woman who put everyone else before herself. She loved her kids fiercely and they are now left without a Mother,” the page stated.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, emphasizing the dangers of domestic violence and urging individuals in crisis to seek help.
