Clay County, Florida – More than 80 dogs and puppies are now safe after authorities uncovered a suspected dogfighting operation spanning multiple properties in Clay and Union counties, marking one of the most disturbing animal cruelty cases in the region this year.
Early morning search and seizure warrants executed on December 10 brought an end to what investigators describe as a coordinated and brutal illegal operation. The dogs, many showing signs of severe abuse, were removed from three separate properties following a joint investigation involving local law enforcement and animal welfare experts.
Multi-Agency Operation Brings Dogs to Safety
The rescue was carried out at the request of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Union County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Humane World for Animals. Veterinarians from the University of Florida Veterinary Forensic Sciences Laboratory provided critical on-scene medical assessments to stabilize the animals and document evidence of abuse.
Search warrants were served simultaneously across all three locations to prevent the removal or harm of animals during the operation.
Disturbing Conditions Found at the Properties
What investigators discovered on arrival painted a grim picture of sustained cruelty.
Many dogs were found chained with heavy restraints, exposed to the elements with nothing more than plastic barrels or makeshift shelters. Others were confined to filthy outdoor hutches and pens, standing in their own waste with no signs of basic care.
On one Union County property, two young puppies were discovered alone and crying, separated from their mother and left without food or protection.
Clear Signs of Dogfighting and Severe Injuries
Across all locations, responders observed extensive scarring on numerous dogs, injuries consistent with organized dogfighting. Many animals were severely underweight, suffering from skin disease, open sores, and fresh wounds.
One particularly heartbreaking case involved a dog found on the Clay County property who was missing his foot. Veterinarians determined the animal had suffered a traumatic amputation that had never been treated, leaving him in prolonged pain and infection.
Investigators also located treadmills, breeding tools, and conditioning equipment, all commonly used to train dogs for violent combat.
Officials Condemn the Cruelty
Kate MacFall, Florida state director for Humane World for Animals, described the scene as devastating.
“Their scars tell a heartbreaking story. The sadness and suffering these dogs have endured is unimaginable. This was a complex, multi-agency effort, and we are grateful to law enforcement for taking decisive action.”
Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook emphasized the importance of community involvement in bringing the case forward.
“We take allegations of animal abuse and dogfighting very seriously. We’re thankful to community members whose information helped launch this investigation and to our partners who supported this operation.”
Dogfighting Linked to Wider Criminal Activity
Animal welfare officials warn that dogfighting is rarely an isolated crime. According to Humane World for Animals, organized dogfighting operations often overlap with weapons offenses, illegal gambling, drug trafficking, and violent crimes.
Dogfighting is a felony offense, punishable by up to five years in prison for operating fights or for possessing, breeding, transporting, or training dogs for fighting.
Nearly 200 Dogs Rescued Nationwide This Year
This Florida operation is part of a broader national effort to dismantle illegal dogfighting networks. In 2025 alone, Humane World for Animals has assisted authorities in Florida, South Carolina, and Indiana, helping rescue nearly 200 dogs from 12 properties connected to suspected dogfighting activities.
Road to Recovery Begins
Following the rescue, Furry Friends Humane transported the dogs to a secure, confidential location. There, Humane World for Animals responders and volunteers are providing urgent medical treatment, proper nutrition, and behavioral care.
Additional support is being provided by RedRover Responders, whose volunteers are assisting with daily care as the dogs begin a long and carefully managed recovery process.
Community Vigilance Remains Critical
Authorities say cases like this highlight the importance of public awareness and reporting suspected abuse. Thanks to swift action and collaboration, these dogs are no longer trapped in a violent underground industry driven by profit and cruelty.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not ruled out additional charges or arrests as evidence continues to be reviewed.
