Okaloosa County Drug Bust Uncovers Smuggling Scheme Involving Correctional Officer

Okaloosa County, FL – A multi-year investigation led by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has uncovered a major drug trafficking operation in Okaloosa County. The bust, part of an operation called “Operation Whipslider,” revealed a prison smuggling scheme involving a correctional officer.

The Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO) Exposed

The investigation targeted an organization responsible for smuggling drugs such as cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana into the area. Taj Tariq Tamboura Robinson, identified as the leader of the DTO, was the main source of the drugs, with cocaine and fentanyl sourced from Houston, Texas.

In cooperation with the State Attorney’s Office and the Office of Statewide Prosecution, three other individuals were arrested in connection with the operation:

  • Lakendrick Ford-Davis
  • Darrisha Burden
  • Mechelle Taylor

Correctional Officer Involvement and Smuggling Operations

A key element of the investigation revealed Darrisha Burden’s role in obtaining and packaging contraband, which included cellphones, tobacco, and controlled substances, for smuggling into state prisons.

In addition, Lakendrick Ford-Davis, a state correctional officer at the facility where Rashid Robinson was incarcerated, allegedly received the contraband from Mechelle Taylor and delivered it to Robinson inside the prison.

This scheme highlights a significant breach of security within the state correctional system.

Charges and Legal Consequences

The investigation resulted in multiple federal indictments and substantial seizures. Robinson faces serious charges, including:

  • Conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute over 5 kilograms of cocaine, 400 grams of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana
  • Distribution of more than 500 grams of cocaine
  • Conspiracy to commit money laundering

Rashid Robinson, also involved in the operation, faces similar charges related to the distribution and possession of large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.

Tyrese Davis is charged with possession with intent to distribute over 400 grams of fentanyl.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Impact

This bust underscores the importance of law enforcement collaboration in tackling the complex issue of drug trafficking, particularly when it involves prison-based smuggling operations. Authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the organization’s activities, including possible connections to additional correctional staff or incarcerated individuals.
