North Olmsted, OH – A 42-year-old Ohio man is now facing a murder charge after police say he shot his wife during an argument, then called 911 claiming the gun fired by mistake. 911 Call Reveals Man Saying His Wife Was “Scared”
Authorities say Joseph Halpin, 42, dialed 911 around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, reporting that he had cocked a gun inside their Lorain Road home and it “accidentally” went off, striking his wife, 39-year-old Laura Hoopengardner, in the abdomen.
According to the recording, Halpin told dispatchers:
“She’s on the ground… she’s scared.”
During the call, Halpin could also be heard telling someone at the scene,
“I didn’t mean to. The gun just went off.”
Dispatchers instructed him to get clean cloths and apply pressure to the wound while officers rushed to the home.
Police Arrive to Find Man Holding Gun to His Head
North Olmsted police said that when officers entered the residence, they saw Halpin holding a firearm to his own head, creating an immediate life-or-death confrontation.
One officer urgently pleaded:
“Put the gun down… We can work this out, man! I don’t want to shoot you!”
A dispatcher monitoring the situation whispered,
“This is not good,”
as the tense standoff unfolded.
After roughly two minutes of negotiations, Halpin dropped the weapon and officers safely took him into custody.

Once Halpin was secured, police entered further into the house and discovered Hoopengardner suffering from a severe gunshot wound to her abdomen. First responders transported her to a nearby hospital, but doctors later pronounced her dead.
