Hayward, CA – A botched attempted robbery involving a group from Oakland ended dramatically with a high-speed chase and vehicle crash in Hayward on Wednesday afternoon. The incident began when several armed suspects confronted a security guard, ultimately leading to a police-monitored pursuit and multiple hospitalizations.
The Failed Armed Robbery Attempt
At around 3 p.m., authorities were dispatched to the intersection of International Boulevard and Durant Avenue after reports of an attempted armed robbery. According to the Oakland Police Department, several masked suspects confronted a security guard and threatened him with weapons. The security guard, who was also armed, fired shots in the direction of the suspects, though no injuries were reported from the shooting.
Following the confrontation, the would-be robbers fled the scene in a vehicle, initiating a tense and dangerous chain of events.
High-Speed Pursuit and Helicopter Monitoring
A police motorcycle officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over and sped away. Rather than initiate a traditional ground pursuit, officers chose to follow and monitor the vehicle with the help of ARGUS, the department’s helicopter surveillance unit. This approach ensured public safety while maintaining oversight of the suspects’ movements.
The fleeing vehicle was tracked as it traveled into Hayward, where the situation escalated further.
Crash and Arrests
Near the intersection of Hesperian Boulevard and Turner Court, the suspects’ vehicle crashed into another car, causing injuries. Emergency responders transported three suspects to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Authorities confirmed that two of the suspects are juveniles. The driver of the other vehicle also sustained injuries but was reported to be in stable condition.
Despite the crash and subsequent arrests, police state that at least two additional individuals remain wanted
“Safety of the public is our top priority, and our decision to monitor the fleeing vehicle via helicopter rather than risking a high-speed chase on the ground was deliberate,” said an Oakland Police spokesperson.
