A big company is now announcing unexpected layoffs in Virginia. This is the second time this year that jobs have been cut in the state.
UPS sent a WARN warning to the Virginia Employment Commission telling them that they are letting go of 153 workers in Virginia.
Keep in mind that the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act says a company with more than 100 full-time employees has to give 60 days’ notice before firing 50 or more people in one place.
In June, UPS will close its office in Roanoke, Virginia.
The UPS facility in Mechanicsville, Virginia, shut down its night sortation shift in February, according to an email from Jim Mayer, a spokesman for the company at the time.
The day sort at the company’s Warwick, Rhode Island, location closed on April 2, and the night sort at its Maspeth, New York, location will close on May 10.
Mayer said, “We often look at our operations and change how our network works to meet demand.”
“This lets us keep offering the best service in our field while also keeping our prices low.”
Business Insider says that UPS plans to cut 12,000 jobs across the U.S. earlier this year. This could save the company $1 billion in 2024.
