Green Bay, Wisconsin – Democrats have chosen Kamala Harris as their presidential nominee. She got enough votes from delegates to win the party’s ticket.
The official statement was made on Friday by the chair of the Democratic National Convention. The news came just hours after Harris’ campaign said it raised more than $300 million last month, which was more than what was raised for President Joe Biden’s second term.
Vice President Harris says it’s an honor to be the likely Democratic choice for president, but she won’t officially accept the nomination until next week. Thursday, Harris talked about her hopes for the future during a video for her campaign. She also said that her team needs to do a lot of work.
Regardless of your political views, Harris’s nomination is a big step forward in American politics. She is the first Asian-American woman and the first Black woman to lead a major party ticket.
Friday, she finally secured her spot at the top of the ticket. People in northeast Wisconsin are talking about what they think about this historical possibility. Some moms and girls in Green Bay told us that the idea of a female president gives them a new sense of what’s possible.
Adyson Gebhart, 17, said, “In our history, we’ve only had male presidents. Maybe having a woman in Congress and as President will give us a fresh start and open up our world to more possibilities.”
A different girl we talked to said, “It makes me feel great because girls rule the world.”
Rhonda Chandler, who started and runs the Green Bay group “Lovin’ The Skin I’m In,” says she hopes Harris’s success will serve as an example for young women.
